Description: Job Title: Applied Scientist/EM Systems Engineer
Job Code: SAS20232102-97462 Job Location: San Leandro, CA Job
Description: The Applied Technologies Division of L3Harris, in San
Leandro CA, focuses on developing cutting edge pulsed power
systems, x-ray radiation sources, EMP and high power microwave
radiation sources, high-voltage switches & power-conditioning
components. These core technologies are applied to build systems
for flash x-ray imaging, electron beam sterilization, for driving
high power lasers (such as those used for fusion research), and for
simulating radiation environments, such as space, to study how
electronics, optics, and various materials are affected by
electromagnetic radiation. The largest pulsed power systems built
here produce millions of amps at millions of volts, delivered
within hundreds of nanoseconds. Succeeding at these fast-paced,
demanding conditions requires a talented team of curious,
passionate scientists, designers, technicians, and engineers. The
division conducts both R&D and manufacturing to serve a mix of
government and commercial customers. Essential Functions:
- Work with a team to lead tests on large pulsed power machines
and radiation sources.
- Mentor more junior scientists and engineers
- Lead the design and execution of experiments, on real machines
or in simulations.
- Own parts of the system-level design of large pulsed power
machines
- Develop, troubleshoot, calibrate diagnostics such as high
voltage/current sensors, spectrometers, and calorimeters.
- Tackle new and varied development problems where only general
objectives are stated.
- Run simulations using basic circuit models and compare their
results to experimental data.
- Apply scientific scrutiny to experimental & simulation results
to interpret & draw conclusions.
- Write reports detailing the results of experiments or
simulations.
- Work with customers to understand testing requirements and how
to achieve them.
- Contribute ideas for impactful advanced R&D projects to the
team.
- Lab work involving standing, bending, lifting, walking,
reaching, etc
- Actively engage to assure safety protocols are followed and
take required safety training. Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering,
mechanical engineering, or related field, and 9 years of work
experience, OR Master's degree and 7 years of work experience, OR a
PhD and 5 years of work experience.
- Highly skilled at experimental lab work.
- Effective communication in oral and written technical English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Skilled at setting up and troubleshooting experimental
equipment such as vacuum systems, data acquisition systems
(sensors/monitors, oscilloscopes, delay generators etc), and
electrical systems.
- Experience with pulsed power systems, high voltage systems, or
other related fields
- Knowledge of plasma physics concepts.
- Knowledge of e-beam/x-ray diagnostics.
- Comfortable with data analysis of physical timeseries data
- Comfortable using basic tools
- Comfortable reading engineering drawings to assemble or
troubleshoot lab equipment
- Enjoy figuring out how things work, taking things apart and
putting back together
- Detail oriented and observant of details that could impact
experimental outcomes
