for transforming the renewable chemicals industry. Fermentation Research Associate Type: Full Time Min. Experience: Entry Level We are a biotechnology-centric chemicals company engineering microbe-based processes for making chemicals and high-performance materials that go into everyday products. We work with industry-leading partners to develop and introduce novel bio-based products to enable high growth market opportunities where sustainability, bio-content, and high performance are key. Our mission is realized through our proprietary Carbon Conservation -(C 2 ) biotechnology platform, which enables the rapid development of scalable production processes operating at breakthrough efficiencies while delivering substantially lower costs than incumbent processes - if they exist. The Opportunity Initially r eporting to one of the Founders, this role will be the second official hire in fermentation development. We 're seeking an enthusiastic, hands-on Fermentation Research Associate to grow the Process Development & Scale-up Group. In this role, you'll have the unique opportunity to work with two different products at two different stages in the development process. You will gain diverse experiences with assembling and scaling commercially-relevant bioprocess workflows by exploring a combination of both established and cutting-edge technologies. Youwill also have opportunities for consistent multi-disciplinary collaborations with internal R&D groups as well as the company's external partners to accelerate the scale-up of fermentation and downstream product recovery processes from the benchtop to the pilot and demonstration levels. Responsibilities

  • Develop commercially-scalable processes for the production of microbial fermentation-based products
  • H ands- on set-up, execution, and clean-up of bench-scale bioreactors for both proof-of-concept experiments and benchmarking studies to meet project milestones aimed at achieving product titers, rates, and yields at industrial specifications
  • Sampling and sample processing, in addition to establishing new approaches for evaluating process streams
  • Routinely interface with and support the Downstream Processing Group, and also collaborate with CMO partners on fermentation scale-up endeavors
  • Contribute to the expansion of the Fermentation and Scale-up group's capabilities by exploring new technologies and strategies to improve production and accelerate scale-up efforts
  • Contribute to the development of ZymoChem's IP strategy & portfolio toward expanding the company's market position
  • Interface with the company's data management system to record fermentation-based data and implement statistical analyses on large data sets
  • Support the maintenance of the company's bioprocessing technologies via hands-on equipment troubleshooting & repair Qualifications
    • Degree in (Bio)chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Process Engineering, Material Science, or a related discipline
    • PhD with 0+ years ; MS degree with 0 + years ; BS with 2+ years of industrial/startup experience working directly with bench and pilot-scale bioprocess development
    • Hands-on expertise with microbiology/fermentations, bioreactors and bioprocess-related unit operations is a requirement
    • Experience with chemical separations equipment and related analytical devices is a plus
    • Strong aptitude for hands-on work with equipment along with a rigorous attention to details with experimental design, execution, and recordkeeping
    • Excellent time management skills, effective with multitasking, and an adept ability to improvise work plans while maintaining efficiency
    • Capability and willingness to work extended days, off-peak hours, and weekends Nice-to-have
      • Fundamental knowledge of biochemical & process engineering principles including mass balance & transport, reactor design, fluid dynamics, and process control
      • Experience with fermentation broth

Experience: Experienced ZymoChem is hiring a -Metabolic Engineering Scientist -to join a rapidly expanding R&D team and provide crucial support to both the strain development and fermentation groups for the fast-paced, goal-driven development of the company's novel carbon conserving metabolic pathway biotechnology. This role is a growth-based opportunity to acquire extensive, diverse experiences and skills with strain engineering, microbial physiology, biosynthetic pathway optimization, enzyme development, and fermentation science. The -Metabolic Engineering Scientist -will also have an opportunity to build out & expand the Strain Development Group's capabilities with state-of-the-art technologies as well as to collaborate with other internal R&D groups and the company's external partners. Responsibilities
          • Lead the development of strains with a focus on optimizing novel metabolic pathways for achieving targeted TRY metrics of small molecule products
          • Design and implement molecular and synthetic biology workflows for the construction of plasmids, strains, and enzymes to facilitate strain engineering efforts
          • Lead the design of experiments, creation & optimization of protocols, and collection & processing data
          • Guide and perform in vitro -and -in vivo -enzymatic assays, and lead strain evaluation
          • Effectively communicate and collaborate with other R&D groups, including the Molecular Biology, Enzyme Engineering, Fermentation, and Analytics teams
          • Interface with the company's data management system to record strain and enzyme-based data
          • Coordinate with external collaborators, partners, and vendors to ensure smooth workflow between all stakeholders
          • Assist with the expansion of the group's capabilities by exploring new technologies and strategies to improve experimental throughput and support automation efforts
          • Mentor and guide junior Research Associates in the Strain Development Group Qualifications
            • PhD or MS in Biochemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
            • PhD with 1+ year (or MS degree with 4+ years) research experience in an industrial/startup research group is preferred
            • Demonstrated ability to reach targeted metrics though design, construction, and testing of strains and metabolic pathways; hands-on experience with metabolic modeling is a plus
            • Experience working with the engineering of bacteria is required; additional experience with E. coli and/or other industrially relevant microorganisms is a plus.
            • Hands-on experience with synthetic biology and strain engineering techniques such as PCR, Gibson Assembly, restriction digestion, ligation, and homologous recombination
            • Experience with protein expression, purification, and enzymatic assays.
            • Rigorous attention to details with experimental design, execution, noise/variability, reproducibility, and record keeping
            • Keen sense for both physical (lab) and data-oriented organization
            • Excellent time management skills, effective with multitasking, and an adept ability to improvise work plans while maintaining efficiency
            • Clear and effective communication skills
